Opening Address

Dear Friends,

I warmly welcome you to the 2nd issue of ILJ for 2010. I would like to begin this issue my offering my condolences to the family of Dr. Ghanshyam Singh, Registrar of National Law University, Delhi who suddenly passed away on 1st April, 2010 due to a massive heart attack.

This issue focuses on important legal issues like taxation issues affecting the real estate industry post the Union Budget as well as the court approved scheme of amalgamation, the rule of law enterprises, patenting nanotechnology, emergence of sports law in India, Economic crimes, espionage and the IT (Amendment) Act 2008, role of independent directors in the light of the companies bill 2009, guidelines fro setting up a business in Dubai, IPR issues affecting M&As, a critique of the caste based reservation system in India and  methods of calculating mobile termination charge. The issue also contains an interesting article on how the world’s first aviation law moot came into existence. The interview of the month deals with several challenges that face the Indian legal industry post the global economic meltdown while the book review deals with a review on a book related to the comparison of gift laws across several countries in Europe and India as well.

Our legal writing competition Licito Concurso’10 started towards the end of January this year and will continue till the end of May. ILJ is also working on coming out with law school rankings for both Indian and UK law schools. Last month, ILJ was the media partner for two events namely the first Leiden-Sarin Air Law Moot which was held at National Law University, Delhi and a roundtable discussion workshop on sexual harassment organized by Kochhar & Co, a premier law firm in India and the V.V. Giri Institute of Labour. I wish to express my sincere thanks to all those who have extended their unflinching support for the launch of India Law Journal, particularly our esteemed Board of Editors and the Editorial Team. I also wish to convey my sincere gratitude to the erudite personalities who have contributed invaluable articles for publication. Your feedback will be extremely useful.
