University Review of the Month

Northwestern School of Law

The law school is located at the eastern edge of Northwestern’s 20-acre Chicago campus. The city provides an ideal setting for the study of law and students take advantage of the location through visits to courts, law firms and corporations. The law school is adjacent to the Kellogg School of Management. Northwestern provides a superior foundation in legal reasoning, analysis and writing as well as a thorough understanding of the structures of law. Communication and team building are essential ingredients of legal training apart from a host of international opportunities which students are offered. The university offers a comprehensive clinical program to learn and negotiate effectively in advocacy and negotiation.

Internationally renowned scholars

With a low student-faculty ratio and small classes, students establish one-on-one relationships with distinguished scholars who are world leaders in today’s leading legal, academic and public policy issues. Its faculty members who are internationally renowned scholars in a wide range of laws ranging from corporate to criminal, international trade, international human rights and contracts include a past chairman of the U.S Securities and Exchange Commission, the first American attorney to argue a case before the European Court of Human Rights among others.

Programs offered for international students

Northwestern offers a number of programs to study. These include

1.Two-year JD

To truly stand out today, lawyers from around the world are choosing to earn a full JD or a similar post-graduate degree.

2. General LLM

The nine-month general LLM program offers outstanding graduates of foreign law schools an opportunity to expand their knowledge in international law and engage in comparative legal research.

3. Graduate Program in Law and Business (LLM/Kellogg)

This program is the cornerstone of Northwestern Law’s differentiating approach to international legal education. Designed for business lawyers educated outside the United States, the LLM/Kellogg program offers students a rare opportunity to study both business law and management techniques at two of America’s leading schools-Northwestern Law and the Kellogg School of Management. Graduates from this program stand out from thousands of international lawyers because they bring valuable experience and even potential contacts back to their employees.

4. LLM Human Rights Concentration

Students in the general LLM program can chose to concentrate in human rights. This program is designed for those who have career interests in international human rights as well as those from transitional democracies interested in the application of human rights law to circumstances in their home countries.

5. Executive LLM

Recognizing that many international professionals cannot afford to travel to the United States for extended study because of work or family commitments, this program helps legal professionals who can pursue an LLM from Northwestern Law while continuing their commitments in their home countries.

Interview with the dean

Our Associate Director, Mr. Vikrant Pachnanda met the dean of the law school Mr. David E. Van Zandt when he visited India last December. He observed that no other law school comes close to taking the steps that Northwestern takes to instill and foster its atmosphere. According to him, Northwestern’s strategic plan has set a new standard in legal education by empowering students to meet the challenges of a world that is more complex, global and competitive. This makes its students more mature, experienced leaders with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. He also said that Northwestern preferred students who are interested in applying to have a work experience of around 2 years especially if they wanted financial aid. Talking about financial aid, Mr. Zandt said that Northwestern does provide for financial aid for those students whose financial status was below a particular level and were the exceptionally good in their academics with adequate work experience.
